Former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on Sunday dedicated India’s first Carbon Fiber Plant near Vadodara in Gujarat. The carbon fiber material is used in formula one race cars, Automotive racing and styling, boats, bicycles, defense and planes, Robotics, Radio Controlled aircraft etc.

Shri.Nitinbhai Patel (Minister-Gujarat State, Water supply,Water Resources (Excluding Kalpsar Division),Urban Development & Urban Housing, Dr. K Radhakrishnan (Chairman, ISRO) (Chairman and Secretary Department of Space), Dr. V K Saraswat (Scientific Advisor to RM and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D), Prof Samir K Brahmachari Director General (CSIR) & Secretary (DSIR) were present on the occasion.

About the plant

Kemrock’s newly commissioned India’s first CARBON FIBRE FACILITY has recieved technical know-how from National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore, which would serve the DefenCe, Aerospace & Infrastructure Sectors to lead the nation towards self-sufficiency in Carbon Fiber Technology.

The initial manufacturing capabilities of 400 tpA will produce aerospace grade carbon fiber and prepregs. The carbon fiber manufacturing facility is fully integrated, which includes polymerization, wet spinning, oxidization & carbonization and includes all utilities for effluent & waste management. This integration will ensure the right quality of precursor (special acrylic fiber) for aerospace grade carbon fiber, thereby serving the nation’s requirements in those defence & aerospace sectors lead by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.(HAL), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) & Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).

Following are properties of Carbon fiber:

*  Smaller and lighter specific gravity than steel.

ultramarines: a warhammer 40,000 movie video

* High modulas and high rigidity.
* High strength .
* High fatigue strength.
* High wear resistivity and moisture absorbance.
* Smaller coefficient of expansion and dimension stability.

* Good thermal conductivity
* High thermal resistivity under non oxygen atomosphere
* High chemical resistivity
* Non-corrosive
* Good biocompatibility
* Good electric conductivity
* Good EMI shielding

* Good X-ray permability
* Anisotropic material and flexible structural design according to various needs

    India needs to get into manufacturing such kind of specialized products to become self reliant.
    As a composite engineer myself I am very happy to see a carbon fiber processing plant come up in India and that too inagurated by Dr. A.P.J. Kalam.
