The most wanted import in Kerala nowadays is the river sand of Gujarat. Ships loaded with thousands of tonnes of river sand from Gujarat travel to Kerala frequently to satisfy Kerala’s construction industry needs.

It is interesting to note, that why Kerala seeks river sand from place as far as Gujarat. Kerala’s rivers were ruined by sand mafias due to heavy mining activities that continued for period of as long as twenty years.

This resulted into shortage of surface water in rivers in winter and summer seasons. Kerala first controlled and then banned sand mining in several districts.

This government action triggered trafficing of river sand from adjoining Tamilnadu state. Last year Tamilnadu banned river sand transportation to Kerala and arranged strict security on all border posts. This has caused great shortage of river sand in Kerala. The Keralians now import sand via sea route from Gujarat. So the latest development is that, the rivers of Gujarat are looted for construction activism in Kerala. In the video above, you can watch one of the ships that has brought thousands of tonnes of river sand from Gujarat.

The process for development and construction requires sand.Unless we quickly find alternatives we will be in big big trouble. Our rivers will go dry and river life will be affected.

actually, it will be beneficial, if properly done.
this will give more depth to river and hence, storage
capacity. For example, Sabarmati, Vatrak, Mahisagar
need to have send dug. This sale will subsidse the
    digging of river bed.

I was wathcing Tapi on google earth and river bed is so
much filled with sand that river is overflowing in heayv
    monsoon season.

Let Narendra Modi comes up with proper idea and do
    proper chanelling of river flow.

To some extend Sand mining is good for any river, reservoir and large water bodies. But things may turn detrimental to our rivers if sand mining done at the current. I think better solution for this problem would be process the desert sand and use it for construction activities.
