Maharaja Express brings in foreign tourists to Central Gujarat

Recently initiated luxury train for foreign tourists – Maharaja Express has started bringing in flock of foreign tourists to three places in Central Gujarat.

The train that starts from Mumbai – stops only at Vadodara Railway station in Gujarat. The tourists are then taken to Champaner World Heritage Site in AC cars and from there to Jambughoda’s Heritage stay for lunch. Tourists come back to Vadodara and enjoy Royal hospitality at Gaekwads’ city palace over a high-tea.

Speaking with Gujarat Money, Karamvir Singh, price of Jambughoda who runs ‘A Home for Nature Lovers’, a 9-room heritage stay property says, “the first group of foreign tourists arrived at our Jambughoda facility for lunch. They spent some two-thre hours here. In April, we are booked for lunch on  four dates. The train has 84-tourist capacity. We prepare 21 Veg and 4 non-veg dishes for them as per the contract with Cox and Kings and IRCTC. We are told that we have to cater them food in Gujarati style. To follow this instruction we have abandoned the buffet catering practice and set up a tent in which they are catered varieties of food on table.”

Karamvir Singh says they have 9-room facility in 12 acre palace campus. “We cook food from organic material grown in our own farm,” Singh added.

The Cox & King officials had visited thrise to Jambughoda heritage stay facility to check the services they provide. They also suggested some changes that are followed. According to Karamvir Singh, the eco-tourism in Jambughoda is picking up. “For last three years, we witness 20 to 30% rise in tourist traffic annually. Our 80% guests are domestic and 20% foreigners,” he said.

The Maharaja Express is a joint venture of tourism giant Cox & Kings in a tie up with the Indian Railways Catering & Tourism (IRCTC).

There are four packages of the train – Princely India, Royal India, Classical India and Celestial India. The city of Vadodara has been selected to host the train under two packages – Princely India and Royal India.

While Princely India package  has an 8 days/ 7 nights trip on Mumbai – Vadodara – Udaipur – Jodhpur – Bikaner – Jaipur – Ranthambore – Agra – Delhi circuit,  Royal India package has 7 Days / 6 Nights trip on Delhi – Agra – Ranthambore – Jaipur – Bikaner – Jodhpur – Udaipur – Vadodara – Mumbai circuit.

For a sumptuous lunch, the tourists travel back more than a century to the ancient Jambughoda Palace to enjoy the hospitality of the feudal family who own this vintage estate.
